We acknowledge that we are located on the traditional lands of the Hodinohso:ni, Anishinabewaki and Attiwonderonk peoples. We understand the lands where we reside are covered by the 1784 Haldimand Proclamation (Treaty) that grants the Six Nations a tract of land on the Grand River , “ six miles deep” from each side of the river, from its mouth to its source and the Upper Canada Treaties (1764-1860s). We understand that Treaties are nation to nation agreements between Indigenous peoples and the federal government (or the Crown [England]).
We acknowledge that Treaties existed long before settler Canadians arrived. We also understand their significance. Mistawasis, Cree Chief, speaking at Treaty 6 proceedings (1876) “ what we speak of and do now will last as long as the sun shines and the river runs, we are looking forward to our children’s children”.
